The Velvet Shore – Contemporary Landscape Print
The Velvet Shore is a contemporary landscape print by British artist Claire Gill, created through digital photomontage.. Layers of colour, vegetation and texture come together to create a peaceful, imagined landscape with a distant horizon.
Rather than recording a single view, Claire constructs the landscape from her own photographs. She cuts out, layers and rearranges individual photographic fragments digitally until a new composition begins to emerge. As a result, the finished artwork sits somewhere between photography, collage and painting.
Created Through Digital Photomontage
Claire’s slow digital photomontage process begins with photographs gathered on walks and journeys. Details of plants, textures, surfaces and landscapes become the raw material for a completely new place.
In The Velvet Shore, the layers lead the eye through the landscape towards the horizon. Subtle changes in colour and texture create a sense of depth and distance. Meanwhile, the open composition retains the quiet and stillness that runs throughout Claire’s work, inviting the viewer to pause and explore the details within the imagined landscape.
