‘Painting by Numbers’ is a contemporary seascape print, inspired by the coast and harbour in Southwold, Suffolk. I created it by digitally combining original photographs taken at Southwold. My aim when creating digital photomontages is always to retain a sense of the places I visit. However the very act of combining different images of the place, leads to the creation of an entirely new scene, which as a consequence leaves space for the imagination.

I love the circular route from Southwold town, along the beach to the harbour and back. Each time I walk it there are different things to see. In this print I have juxtaposed images of the harbour with the beach to reflect this experience of the place. During the process of creating the work, the photomontages go through many stages before the resulting image. In the early stages, this particular image looked like a paint by numbers image that I remembered from childhood, hence the name of the artwork.
