NEW PRINTS
These new prints have been inspired by the idea of mark making. I never know what is going to grab my attention when I am exploring the coastline. On a visit to Worthing beach I couldn’t help notice the way that planks of wood had been laid in rickety strips stretching down the beach from the boats. My guess was that they provided a base upon which to slide the boats over the pebbles to the sea. However they appeared to me like directional marks I had been drawing in an abstract project with my year 9 class. Some were orderly and some tossed on top of each other haphazardly. The ropes left lying around reminded me of scribbles. I knew I wanted to explore these marks in series of works. initially thinking it would take a more abstract direction.
I thought it would be easier than it was to work with such strong directional lines – a gift in terms of composition. The challenge for me lay in creating the environments that surrounded the planks and with working with the more abstract elements of the pictures, allowing the planks to be distinct from the beach on which they sat.
At some point in the process of making the work, the pictures tell me where they want to go. Although each image is created from photographs taken on Worthing beach, they have each taken on a different character, hopefully retaining some sense of the place.
