‘Stems’ is a Cornish seascape print, inspired by Mousehole, which is a small harbour town along the Cornish coastline near Newlyn. I created it by layering and combining original digital photographs taken there. My aim when creating digital collages is to always retain a sense of the places I visit. By combining different images of the place however, an entirely new scene is created, which as a consequence leaves space for the imagination.

Mousehole is a charming town, which I visited several times. Each time I enjoyed the changing appearance of the harbour, depending on whether the sea was in or out. This image is built around the boats that were moored in the harbour. They tilted onto the sand, when the sea was out, as if waiting for the incoming tide to revive them. The ropes mooring them were covered in seaweed and intertwined like plant stems, which inspired the name of the artwork. I loved the boulder like stones in the harbour wall and used artistic license to rebuild them.

Colour for me is a key part of building an image. I focused on rich reds and browns to bring the image together, which is quite a contemporary colour palette for a seascape image.
